David & Goliath (Explored)

Due to health issues and my new job I wasn’t very active here on flickr lately. But finally found some time within my new job to head out for shooting winter trees. Just have to take care about copyright things now. I am the author of the image, but the copyright belongs to the media workshop I am working for 😉

These two trees sitting on top of a small hill I saw the first time back in last summer and was sure they will suit very well into a winter scenery. Winter hit us very late but then very hard with temps below -15C this year after a too warm start in january. I shoot these trees from several places, but this images seems to be the best from my view.

Oh and finally I had the chance to check out my new 5D MKII – what a difference … Read More

Iodine If You Don’t Know Where, What and Why, Prescribe Ye Then K and I (Old Medical Saying)

In clinical practice, the number of women easily identifiable as thyroid deficient has grown to epidemic proportions. Many have gone to their Doctors, have had the standard test; are re-assured they are fine, but are not. It seems the test is unreliable. Dr. David Brownstein in his book; “Iodine why you need it, why you can’t live without it”, quotes from a NHAES study showing iodine levels in the USA have dropped by 50% over the thirty years spanning from 1970 until 2000. Iodine plays a key role in thyroid health. More frighteningly he also points out low iodine levels in pregnant women have increased by 690%. Something is wrong, and we need to ask what!

In spite of massive spending on health care; money that mostly goes on pharmaceutical products, overall health is declining. True, acute disease has lessened significantly, but chronic illness has risen. Maybe, many of the … Read More

Women’s Body Image – What Influences?

Women are often bombarded by fictitious media images about their lives and bodies, and find themselves subscribing to a lifestyle which only relates to a small minority. Most women are aware of these impossibilities yet they feel the pressure to continue to strive for the image of the “top model” and oh…… a size 4′.

Society shapes our body image. In some societies, a robust woman is viewed as being fertile and therefore admired. In the North American culture, however there exists an obsession to be thin and fit. Thinness is associated with high social class, with success, and with the ability to attract a man. The standard of white female beauty has become more narrowly defined and restrictive, making it nearly impossible to be thin enough, fit enough, or young enough. Society sets such high and unrealistic standards that no one can really fit the mold of the ideal … Read More

Chapter 2 – 19/52

Chapter 2 of a 4-week series spread over the year within a 52 week challenge. See below (comment one) for Chapter 1, which starts the story in the spiral of depression and substance use. I am using this story as a mental health awareness series in the hope it opens discussion to a topic that is full of stigma to the point that people are often afraid to talk about it.

Chapter 2 – Spiralling further into depression is scary and lonely. Even as a hand reaches in to help you feel misunderstood and so alone. The hopeless seems endless. In a moment of bravery or in a moment of spirits being lifted you wonder if you can reach for the hand. It seems too far.

***For anyone who is going through some form of depression, substance abuse, or otherwise I hope this image is true to experience though I … Read More
