When flax seed oil first hit the health supplement market, vegans and vegetarians rejoiced. Finally, a health supplement that allowed them to continue to avoid meat and live animal products while filling their body’s desperate and vital need for omega 3 fatty acids, essential nutrients that help keep your heart strong, prevent strokes, improve memory function and delay or even stop Alzheimer’s Disease and Senile dementia.

Unfortunately, the celebration may have been a little premature. In early January, Daily News Central released the results of a study that indicates that while flax seed oil does contain all the proper ingredients that your body needs in order to make DHA and EPA, the two most important forms of omega 3 that have the biggest effect on heart health, mood and memory, your body does not actually use those ingredients to make them.

Therefore, if you take flax seed oil supplements or eat high-flax foods, you will not get the health benefits that you probably believe you are getting from eating this omega 3 rich diet.

Your body’s refusal to take steps to make any type of omega 3 is not surprising.

In fact, the definition of an essential nutrient, of which omega 3 is one, is something that your body needs to function correctly but cannot make on its own. Therefore, while it was certainly to be hoped that the body might manufacture its own DHA and EPA while using the foundations in flax seed as a jump start, no one is particularly surprised that it does not.

However, the health foods industry has been keeping this news fairly low key, probably in large part because flax seed oil has dramatically broadened the market for omega 3 supplements and products.

If you want to make sure that you’re getting enough of the right kinds of omega 3 in your diet, it’s not enough just to take fish oil, however. And in fact, just taking salmon oil may not do the trick either. It’s very important to take a fish oil supplement that’s been treated with a special scientific process called molecular differentiation.

This process filters out the forms of omega 3 that do not benefit your body or that cause unpleasant side effects like fishy body odor and burping, leaving only the best types of omega 3, such as DHA and EPA. E

Even if you prefer to avoid animal products, you should seriously consider a salmon oil product made from Arctic salmon that grow in the clear, uncontaminated waters of the Arctic Circle. These fish are not mistreated or farmed, and live free and happy until they become many useful things, including food and fish oil.
