Official unemployment statistics – 24.4% Unofficially – much higher (September 2012)
Under 25s unemployed – 55%
Unemployment benefit has been set at €350 per month for a maximum number of 12 months after which it ceases. To qualify for unemployment benefit the individual must have had a job that paid into the national social security system. Many professions are exempt from this and provide their own system of health and pension cover but exclude unemployment coverage. If an individual belonging to this group of professionals becomes unemployed and fails to keep up insurance payments, then they also lose their health and pension cover. Families try to find the money to keep up these payments even if the relative has no work. These people are not included in the official statistics for unemployment.
